E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!
A Saskatchewan-based grain brokerage consulting firm is believed to be the first in Western Canada and perhaps the world to make such extensive use of the Internet to market grain for farmers. CGF Brokerage and Consulting of Saskatoon employs qualified graders who analyze grain samples from farmers and grade those samples based on Canadian Grain Commission standards. This detailed information is posted on the Internet along with digital photos of the bin run grain sample, the cleaned sample and the dockage. (See example shown at right.)
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

The following paper represents the current state of research into the use and usage of the Internet for marketing purposes by small medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The paper discusses how the research was established, its design and development, and sets out the operational parameters addressed. It also identifies the factors that SMEs view as critical to the success or otherwise of their development of a web presence. * What is the main driver for an SME to develop a web site * What are the main, identifiable marketing benefits and drawbacks of a Web presence for an SME
Many of the old rules and limitations no longer apply to this new form of marketing, which seeks to talk with, rather than at, the reader. At last count, the Internet links some 46,318 computer networks at sites in 91 countries worldwide. More than half (27,614) the networks are in the United States; not surprisingly, some 20% of these are in California. According to the Internet Domain Survey, conducted in January 1995 by Net Wizards, some 4,852,000 host computers were linked to the Internet. The greatest percentage of these computers were being used in business (27%) and education (23%). The Internet Society estimates an average of 10 users per host. Total users on the net are approaching 50 million, with another million or so getting connected monthly.

In spite of the fact that overall retail sales in Germany fell 2.2 percent in May 2006 (when compared with April 2006) furniture sales in Germany rose 7.4 percent in a similar comparison. The figures were reported by Bloomberg News on June 30, 2006. The strength shown by furniture sales in Germany appears to have been reported in the region generally. A separate Bloomberg News report, published on July 6, 2006, said that retail sales in the eurozone rose for the third straight month. An index of retail sales increased to 55.1 in June 2006, the second highest level since the index began in January 2004.

OREM — Brooks Shankle, the Orem Owlz reserve first baseman, hasnt had many chances this season to deliver a game-winning hit. And playing in only 15 of Orems 37 games, he also has had much need for redemption. But for a short time Saturday he was looking like the goat after dropping a throw from pitcher Aaron Cook in the eighth inning, an error that resulted in a key run for the Idaho Falls Chukars and had the game knotted heading into Orems final at bat. Shankle entered the game hitting only .170 and was hitless Saturday prior to the clutch game-winner. It was only his third RBI of the season.

Q: I was involved in a car accident last night. I havent been to the doctor, although my neck is still very stiff I dont want to go to a solicitor. Can I sue for personal injury on my own? A: You can act for yourself in a personal injury action for less than L1000 in value. However, you must produce medical evidence to prove your case, so it is imperative you go to your GP immediately. You could also act for yourself if the injury was less than 1000 but it would not be treated as a small claim. Solicitors costs would be recoverable if you lost.
Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.

In 1775 Elizabeth, dowager countess of Home, hired the renowned architect Robert Adam to design and complete the interiors of her newly built house at 20 Portman Square, London (Fig. 1). (1) While this patron and commission may not be among the most prestigious of Adams long career, the finished house is widely regarded as one of the best examples of his interior design genius. Lady Home was an immensely rich Jamaican heiress whose fortune increased in 1734 with the death of her first husband, the Honorable James Lawes–the son of the British governor of Jamaica. Lady Home acquired her title through her short-lived second marriage in 1742 to the impoverished spendthrift William (d. 1761), eighth earl of Home, who had abandoned his first wife two years earlier. The new Lady Home became a colorful figure, affectionately known as the Queen of Hell, (2) in the somewhat disreputable social circles of London, and she was a close confidant and supporter of her niece-in-law Anne Horton (1743-1808), duchess of Cumberland. (3) In possession of her magnificent house, Lady Home could show off to the respectable elements of London society as well as provide herself and the Cumberlands with a showcase for their anti-court social set. Home security system maker Interactive Technologies Inc. of North St. Paul, Minn., found a market for its products in Europe. To sell them there, however, mechanical design engineer Jim Kreier needed to package the wallmounted alarm in an attractive shell while providing a strong housing. Interactives first entry into Europe used special boards in heavy steel boxes to “test the waters,” Kreier said. Discovering that consumers there preferred plastic enclosures to steel, Interactive engineers also realized that the European community had not yet standardized on a regulation for home security systems. The company decided to use the stringent mechanical requirements from the IS-199 specification, which called for polycarbonate 1/8 inch thick, Kreier said. The specifications for flame retarding were well defined, Kreier added.

LONDON (AP) — For sale: swimming pool tiles, slightly used, place in rock infamy. The Brian Jones Fan Club is selling tiles from the pool where the charismatic Rolling Stones guitarist was found dead on July 3, 1969. “Its not as macabre as it sounds,” said the fan clubs David Reynolds. “Its just owning something that your hero owned and touched and chose.” Each tile costs $175 and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Ten percent goes to put up a statue of Jones in his home town of Cheltenham, a genteel spa town 120 miles west of London. Since the sale began on the clubs Web site in September, 140 of the 320 blue ceramic tiles have been bought by collectors. The fund has raised $5,700 — about one-sixth the cost of the statue.

If there is one subject easy to find people to talk to about, you would think it would be retirement. But when researchers recently contacted several hundred people on a list of those considering buying a retirement home, the vast majority of them were either travelling, or busy juggling full schedules. Couples often want to get rid of the large family house, but dont like to think that the next move they make will be the last. They want independence, but with the fall-back of a warden on site in an emergency. In 1982, there were only 2,500 private sheltered units in existence in the UK. Today, that figure stands at 90,000, and since the over-55s account for two-fifths of the countrys wealth, they are proving to be a demanding market. It is no longer possible, as it was in the Eighties, for developers to produce small, box-like homes for the elderly and expect them to sell. Now, the key is space and the more American notion of “service”. All the problems and practicalities of running a home can be passed on to someone else - albeit at a price. Increasingly, the service offered to people buying in the grounds of a nursing home is becoming more popular and widespread. “Close care” is similar to sheltered housing, but with the bonus of nursing care either at home or in the main house. Its greatest appeal is that the elderly stand a good chance of staying in their own homes for the rest of their lives. Gwyneth Hodgson, now 84, moved into her flat in the grounds of Hays House, near Shaftesbury, Dorset, when she began to find the upkeep of her house and garden too much. “I didnt want to be a burden on my son, nor did I want to bother friends. When I cut my leg one day, I pressed a button and a nurse arrived at once. I wanted to stay in the area, and this is the perfect answer. I have my dog with me, which is important because I could never live without an animal, and some places dont allow them.” Many people, unused to living so closely with others, regard the prospect with some trepidation, and Mrs Hodgson admits that she likes being alone. “I look out over fields. If it were practical, I would live in a remote country spot, but this is a fair compromise. Most of us are widows and we dont mix a great deal. But there is a residents restaurant if we do want to have lunch together or entertain.” Mrs Hodgson bought her flat from Park Healthcare on a 125-year lease. The annual service charge is pounds 2,657, but this does not cover nursing care. The company is currently selling its latest development, set in the grounds of Elliscombe House, near Wincanton, Somerset. The unusually spacious eight two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom gatehouses are for sale from pounds 169,500 to pounds 189,500, with an additional service charge of pounds 2,800. Service charges are the area most buyers are warned to check out thoroughly. Some offer a minimum of maintenance and warden cover, while others will reflect a ritzy hierarchy of reception staff and services that people may well not use. The cost of running a swimming pool, for instance, may not be justified for an underused facility. In its research, English Courtyard found that buyers felt some developers did not always disclose the full extent of service charge, and worried about the escalation of such costs. Calls to Help the Aged on the subject were an important factor in the charity setting up its own Property Services, a commercial arm of the main campaigning body that was created a year ago. The charity now has 6,000 buyers registered with it, and a nationwide list of retirement homes. Among any group of buyers in this sector, there will always be a “reluctant” proportion - those who will mentally tough it out, even as they become physically more fragile. Godfrey Winterson, of Hamptons International, had to work hard to persuade his mother to give up the struggle of living alone. “After a fourth fall, she started going downhill rapidly. She would not have lasted six months on her own. Now, she goes out at least three times a week and likes to have friends to stay. “The other options we considered were nursing care of pounds 750 a week, or an establishment where she was going to be cared for 24 hours a day at a cost of pounds 3,000 a month. How many years can people afford that?” asks Winterson. A flat with a warden outside a main centre, on the othe hand, could be bought for pounds 60,000, which might leave money over for supply nurses or other forms of care. Even the thought of moving is daunting for some. McCarthy Stone, the largest developer of retirement properties in Britain, finds that a third of its buyers use the part-exchange scheme, often for the convenience of not hav- ing potential buyers traipsing around their homes. The company has also noticed the growing popularity of city-centre locations where everything is on tap. In Bath, it has seen a record number of enquiries for its canalside development. Close care is not easy to find in cities but, for example, the Kensington office of John D Wood has a two-bedroom apartment for sale, for pounds 250,000, at Chartwell House, which has a nursing home attached and is one of a number owned by the Goldsborough Estates, part of Bupa. The service charges start at pounds 117.79 a week. In Richmond, Surrey, meanwhile, Bovis Retirement homes has just completed Fullerton Court, described as “very sheltered living”, where service charges are pounds 4,550 a year. There is some comfort to be taken from the resale values of good retirement properties. English Courtyard says it has beaten the nationwide indices over the past 10 years, and the property has had an annual increase of 5.69 per cent. As the population ages, this is one sector where growth must surely be guaranteed. English Courtyard: 0171-937 4511; Help the Aged Property Services: 0800 592605; McCarthy Stone: 0800 919132; Hays House and Elliscombe Park through the Walton Partnership: 01747 852242; Fullerton Court: 0181-977 1021; Chartwell House (John D Wood): 0171-727 0705

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

The real problem for Feaver began when the IRS agents opened his front door to let in U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett, who had an entirely different goal than tax recovery on his mind. That is when George Mason got involved. Mason was an attorney who had an office in the same building where Feavers firm had its offices. Mason becomes the voice of the novel as Feavers attorney for the defense of the tax fraud charges. The story is told largely from his point of view as he attempts to help Feaver through what becomes a complicated hodgepodge of personal relationships, schemes, double-dealing, subterfuge and, ultimately, death. It seems the U.S. Attorney is interested in leveraging the potential tax charges against Feaver to force Feavers cooperation in a sting operation. The target of the sting is Feavers law partners uncle, the chief judge of the local court. U.S. Attorney Sennett believes there is widespread corruption in the courts. Feaver confirms that he has been involved in a system by which he can influence the outcome of cases favorably. The system involves giving money to various people who work for different judges, and the belief is that some of the money in each case makes its way to the chief judge.

I. INTRODUCTION This study empirically examines person-to-person transactions within the Internet market known as eBay. In this virtual market of unseen participants and products, buyers and sellers face the risks of repudiation, as the counter party may deny the agreement after the fact. Buyers assume risks associated with lack of seller integrity and asymmetric information about the particular product, as the buyer is typically required to send payment before the seller ships the product. In addition, for many eBay transactions, the cost of enforcing a contract is high relative to the transactions value, resulting in a practical absence of legal enforcement. (2) By providing a history of trade execution information, eBay benefits market participants by reducing information asymmetries while achieving substantial transaction cost economies. Market participants relate personal experiences, which eBay uses to calculate a numerical reputation measure for each user. Market participants, in turn, can use this reputation measure to assess counter party risk and adjust bidding behavior accordingly.

A CAMBRIDGE University graduate has been trampled to death by an elephant while trying to photograph it during an overland expedition from Britain to South Africa. Second Lieutenant Edward Harrison, 28, a member of the universitys Officer Training Corps, is believed to have woken at dawn and wandered off on his own to photograph wild animals at the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya on Sunday morning. Fellow travellers were woken by the sound of the elephant and later discovered his body outside the secure compound of the Sopa safari lodge.

When you are involved in a car accident, there are a number of things you should know, but unfortunately, this information is not readily available. This article discusses what you need to know about personal injury claims long before you even think about hiring a lawyer. If you are injured in a car accident, and the accident was not your fault, you have the right to sue the owner and driver of the other vehicle for damages. These damages are paid to you by the other drivers insurance company. Tort law does not compensate the other driver for any injury he or she may have suffered as a result of causing the car accident. However, separate from tort law, all automobile insurance policies sold in Alberta provide for me payment of accident and disability benefits. Unlike tort law, both you and the driver of the other vehicle are entitled to receive the same accident and disability benefits.
It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!

The Poma family dynasty, dating to the early 1900s, today may be best known for its Central American hotels bearing the Camino Real (unrelated to the Camino Real chain in Mexico) and Camino Real Inter Continental names. Its a gateway to Latin America and having a hotel in Miami helps to better serve our guests. Its also part of a master plan. Weve owned the 100 acres where the hotel is for a long time, trying to decide how to develop it. Were now planning a shopping and entertainment district there.

PROVO — The monkey is finally off BYUs back. On Friday, the Cougars (2-12-1) ended their 12-game losing streak by knocking off the Boulder Rapids Reserves 2-1 in overtime. “I have a whole new appreciation for winning now,” BYU coach Chris Watkins said. “It is neat to be rewarded with three points at the end of the day. “Clearly we are getting better. We had our window of opportunity and we finally jumped through it.” It was BYU reserve Chris Lamb who helped the Cougars through that window.

By expanding to almost 7,500 square feet, we have increased our inventory of furniture and decor items, and our warehouse space, said Lina Quintero, Elements of Design owner and lead designer. We offer a significant trade discount to interior designers, who love to shop here for truly unique items, and having such a large showroom simplifies and accelerates the design timeline because appropriate materials are immediately accessible to our in-house design staff. In support of their environmentally friendly practices, the entrance to the new space is a set of reclaimed European double-doors. The hand-painted minute details on the nine-foot-tall doors are extraordinary; lending a unique charm and beauty to the showroom. The doors were recently rescued from a 100-year-old apartment in Paris, France, and brought to the United States. Quintero stated, Reclaimed materials and antiques are the ultimate green recycling opportunity because they bypass the need for manufacturing new materials. Just inside the doors, visitors are greeted with a creative display of sophisticated eco chic products and materials, including wall and floor coverings, paint, surface materials and upholstery fabric.

- BLUE RAPIDS — Capital-Journal to host coffee — Topeka Capital-Journal staffers and columnists will be in Blue Rapids today to host the weekly Community Coffee. Columnists Jim Ramberg and Dick Snider will be on hand to answer questions and to listen to the comments of area residents. A group photo of those in attendance will be taken and published in Thursdays newspaper. The coffee will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Blue Valley Cafe. The Capital-Journal will pick up the tab for the coffee and doughnuts. The public is encouraged to attend.
Coffee houses have been regarded as cultural meeting places since the 17th century in western civilization when artists writers and political activists first started to meet and discuss topics of social interest over a cup of this stimulating drink. The poet Baudelaire in Paris in the 1840s described coffee as best served “black as night hot as hell and sweet as love.” Coffee seems always to have been part of the American landscape as it was a common feature on the chuckwagons of the prairie pioneers and cattle ranchers and in the break-rooms of companies and board rooms. Coffee is so popular in diners and roadside eateries that it is served almost as often as water. But for most of its history coffee was just coffee a commodity that was not associated with brand name or image. All that changed beginning in the 1980s as the result of a convergence of two trends. Americans looking for a socially-acceptable alternative to drug and alcohol intake were well-served by a proliferation of retailers eager to provide high-priced “gourmet” coffee to discriminating drinkers. Specialty shops such as Starbucks in Seattle and Peets Coffee in Berkeley have expanded to national chains whose popularity has eclipsed that of national brands such as Maxwell House and Folgers which spread across America in the fifties. In addition hundreds of independent cafeacute;s and coffee houses were founded in every major American city throughout the 1990s. In the Pacific Northwest–the capital of coffee consumption in America–drive-up espresso shacks line the roadsides providing a variety of coffee drinks to commuters willing to pay $3.50 for a 20-ounce Cafeacute; Mocha with a double shot of espresso. Even a small town like Snohomish Washington with a population of only 8000 boasts a dozen espresso shacks.

Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
Before reading this chapter, please see “How to Get the Most Out of this Book” on page 1. It will clarify questions you may have concerning data collection procedures, forecasting methodology, sources and references, and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. REFINANCED GRANDFATHERED DEBT QUADS AS grandfathered debt if the mortgage proceeds do not exceed the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. Home mortgage interest expense is deductible if certain requirements are met. In general, mortgage interest expense is deductible only if the home is collateral for the debt (secured debt). If the borrower cannot pay the debt, the lender can use the home to satisfy the loan. Interest expense paid on home acquisition debt, home equity debt, and grandfather debt is generally considered deductible. A mortgage taken out after October 13, 1987, to acquire, build, or substantially improve a qualified residence is classified as home acquisition debt. Qualifying debt is limited to $1 million ($500,000 each for married filing separately). The $1 million limitation is reduced (but not below zero) by any grandfathered debt. If home acquisition debt is refinanced, the new debt will qualify as home acquisition debt only up to the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. The interest attributable to the additional debt will be nondeductible personal interest unless it qualifies as home equity debt.

When we launched our `free internet real estate listing business model on August 8, 2006, we knew we had a great product that was designed and formatted to serve the growing number of homeowners wanting to sell their own homes. We however had no idea that FSBO Channels would be so well received that demand would prompt the successful launch of 18 websites in less than two months. We are very pleased with the incredibly positive responses coming from hundreds of buyers and sellers every week, said Ray Whitmer, CEO. FSBO Channels provides all homeowners in 16 cities with a free no strings attached internet venue on which they can list and promote the sale of their own home. Only the power of the internet provides sellers with the level of exposure they need to get a successful sale. Buyers no longer go to a real estate agent to find homes for sale, they use the internet. Some 80% of all buyers and sellers start the process on the internet, making the internet the most important marketing tool available to sellers, says Bert L. Bill, COO. The other cities and states where FSBO Channels offers its totally free FSBO real estate listings are:

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Many people use the related terms religion and spirituality almost interchangeably. I would like to take a look at this set of ideas through the eyes of the Unitarian ministers and philosophers who influenced the Unitarian denomination, and wrote and signed the Humanist Manifesto of 1933. In reading this first Humanist Manifesto, I discovered that within the brief introduction religion or religious is used thirteen times. Also, among the fifteen principles in the manifesto, I found ten that made specific references to religion. That totals twenty-three such references in a four-page document. What did the generation of manifesto signers, committed to naturalistic humanism, have in mind, and how did they define religion? A majority of the signers were Unitarian ministers and few were tenured university professors like Roy Wood Sellars. This fact is apparently significant for both the development of humanism within the Unitarian denomination and for humanism as a philosophical movement. The six leading humanists of the time who had the most impact on the manifesto were John Dietrich and Curtis W. Reese, who were the main force in promoting humanism among the Unitarians; Charles Francis Potter, who established the First Humanist Society of New York as an independent humanist church; Raymond B. Bragg and Edwin H. Wilson, two Unitarian ministers who were instrumental in initiating the manifesto and seeing it through the several steps of writing, revision, signing, printing and distribution; and Roy Wood Sellars, who wrote the first draft of the manifesto.
RELIGION AND THE SPIRITUAL IN CARL JUNG. By Ann Belford Ulanov. New York: Paulist, 1999. Pp. iv + 269. $24.95. U. admits to a strong bias for Jung, but she also teaches alternative maps of the psyche. Her familiarity with Jung is profound and enables her to think original thoughts in his context. Yet she can criticize the master: whereas Jung took issue with Christians for dismissing evil as a privatio boni, U. maintains that he himself did not recognize one of the greatest evils in history [the Holocaust]] when it confronted him in its immeasurable brutality. This is treated as part of a stunning and original reflection on scapegoating. Though U. never directly explains Jung, those not familiar with him can profit from the present work. Jung called himself a Christian and wrote studies of many religious texts; he claimed that among his patients over 35 none was healed without adopting a religious outlook. Yet many have questioned Jungs Christianity (God is both good and evil, etc.). U. does not deal with such controversies, but shows how easily Jungs psychology can be used by more orthodox Christians. She warns that the concreteness of Jesus stands boldly opposed to the ways we make use of him for cause, party or platform as we abstract his particularity to illustrate our values. Those involved in spiritual direction or the relation of religion to psychology and society will find fresh insights in U.s study.

Paul Heaton is back from his holidays in the Canaries where he writes the songs. The Beautiful South are back, too and they are at the Carling Academy Newcastle on Sunday and their new album, Superbi, is fresh, modern and pointed, like a brand new pencil. We always mean to be fresh, says Paul, but we never get around to it. In a career that has spanned nearly two decades, The Beautiful South may possibly have earned the right to lie back and go stale.
This academic satire is about two professors and their families. Howard Belsey is a white secular liberal, a specialist in Rembrandt, who is engaged in ideological warfare with a visiting professor, Monty Kippes, a conservative Christian scholar from Trinidad. Each character in the story is undermined by his or her self-deceptions. Howards attachment to theoretical knowledge seems to preclude understanding or controlling his adulterous behavior. Smith brilliantly draws these and other characters and gently but wittily pierces their illusions and pretensions. Howards African-American wife, Kiki, is one of the few characters to offer emotional or moral ballast, along with her son Jerome, who rejects his parents secularism for a newfound Christianity.
epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
